Italy has as rich a motor racing heritage as any nation in the world, yet hasn't been able to celebrate a homegrown F1 world champion for over 70 years. So why such a long wait?
The nation started so well when the Formula 1 World Championship was inaugurated in May 1950. Three of the first four titles were won by Italians. Dr Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina was the first that year, driving for Alfa Romeo.
