THROUGH THE VISOR: Gasly and Sainz recall their battle at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix
The gap between Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz as they took the chequered flag at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix was just 0.415s, as the Frenchman won his first ever race in Formula 1. And in the latest instalment of our Through the Visor series, the two talk through their close battle at Monza.
Gasly was vaulted into the lead after race leader Lewis Hamilton was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. And after Sainz overtook Kimi Raikkonen in the Alfa Romeo, the Spaniard set about chasing down Gasly for the final 19 laps.
Sainz then got within DRS range of the AlphaTauri driver as the lap count ticked down, and the Spaniard talks through his proposed tactics for overtaking Gasly and his thought process at the time.
FORM GUIDE: Can we look past Verstappen for victory in Italy?
From the opposing point of view, Gasly opens up about his mindset as Sainz closed in on him, as he explains what his defensive strategy was on the final lap, and when he knew he would win the race.
Listen to both drivers as they provide a behind-the-scenes overview of their battle and their emotions as they crossed the line – and hear the detailed communication between both racers and their pit walls as they navigate the final laps at Monza.
