PODCAST: When Senna punched Irvine – Listen to the full story, as told by those who were there
Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna is livid. The three-time World Champion has been enraged by an F1 rookie, Eddie Irvine. The 1993 Japanese Grand Prix is won, but Senna hasn’t finished fighting. He’s determined to teach Irvine a lesson.
The Jordan driver had enraged the champ by unlapping himself during the race, so once the trophies had been handed out and the champagne had been sprayed, Senna went looking for Irvine. What happened next has become the stuff of whispered legend – but now, for the first time ever, you can hear for yourself what actually went on, thanks to a never-before-heard recording of the event, captured by journalist Adam Cooper who had his tape recorder running at the time.
This week's episode of F1's On The Edge podcast features that amazing audio, plus eyewitness accounts from Cooper and Jordan Commercial Director Ian Phillips, as well as contributions from the likes of Eddie Jordan, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen, McLaren Team Coordinator Jo Ramirez, and Jordan press officer Louise Goodman – and archive interviews with Irvine and Senna themselves.
