Jenson Button will be forced to sit out qualifying in Montreal after his McLaren developed an ERS-related fault in Saturday morning’s final practice session.
The British driver stopped his Honda-powered machine at the side of the track in the final minutes of FP3, and though it was recovered quickly to the pits, McLaren have since confirmed that they are unable to fix it in time for Q1.
Button’s failure to take part in qualifying means he will now only be able to start Sunday’s race at the stewards’ discretion from the pit lane. Team mate Fernando Alonso meanwhile only managed three laps in FP3 as his MP4-30 required a new engine.
