‘It hurts a lot’ – Bearman ‘shouldn’t have made that mistake’ as FP3 crash rules him out of Madrid Qualifying

Ollie Bearman admits it "hurts a lot" after a crash in Free Practice 3 prevented the Haas driver from competing in Qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Briton was left as a bystander on Saturday afternoon at the Madring as the American team were unable to repair his damaged Haas in time for Qualifying.

Bearman lost control through the sweeping left of Turn 10 at Formula 1's newest venue in the dying seconds of the final practice session, before spinning and making heavy contact with the wall.

Although Bearman was left unharmed after the accident, just two hours remained before the start of Qualifying, with FP3 having also been delayed by 30 minutes due to barrier damage from Lewis Hamilton's earlier crash.

"It's a shame to be standing here right now," said Bearman as he performed media duties with Qualifying still underway.

"The car was quick. Yesterday was a tough day, but we made some changes overnight and the car was feeling really good in FP3.

"Unfortunately I got caught out in Turn 10 on that final lap – a combination of tyres were a bit older and I had a gust of wind not in my favour, so yeah, it's a shame.

"I shouldn't have made that mistake. It hurts a lot because the car is strong, but I'm sure that there can be some opportunities tomorrow."

It means Bearman will start at the back of the grid for Sunday's 57-lap race, with overtaking expected to be difficult around the narrow but high-speed circuit.

But new upgrades introduced in Monza last weekend, and team mate Esteban Ocon taking P13 on the grid in Spain, have given Bearman a glimmer of hope.

Bearman added: "We have to dust ourselves off and look at the positives, and the positive is that the car was fast and we'll be giving it everything to do the best we can tomorrow."
