WATCH: Ride onboard as Piastri takes pole for the Qatar Sprint
Oscar Piastri capitalised to secure pole position for the Qatar Sprint.
Oscar Piastri rediscovered his strong Sprint Qualifying form in Qatar as he took pole position on his final lap, edging out George Russell and his McLaren team mate Lando Norris to the top spot.
The Australian's 1m 20.055s effort was enough to displace the Mercedes by just 0.032s, providing a suitably dramatic end to the close-fought session. With Norris set to start the Sprint from third place, he will be focused on passing Piastri as early as possible to continue his ambition of securing the title this weekend.
Both Piastri and Verstappen are 24 points adrift of Norris in the Standings, meaning that the Briton needs to outscore them by two points at the chequered flag in Sunday's Grand Prix to seal his maiden crown. But Piastri is piling the pressure on with his Sprint pole and previous success at this circuit, leaving Norris with plenty of work still to do.
