WATCH: Italian GP red-flagged as Leclerc walks away from huge crash

There was huge drama at Monza on Sunday afternoon as the Italian Grand Prix was red flagged for the first time since 1995 following a huge crash for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Just moments after the race had gone green following a Safety Car - called to clear Kevin Magnussen’s stricken car - Leclerc lost control going around the high-speed Parabolica final corner and plunged headfirst into the tyre barriers.

Despite the impact, the Monegasque driver quickly signalled he was ok before climbing out, saying: “Was a big crash – arghh! I’m sorry, but honestly I struggled so much with the balance. I’m sorry.”

Leclerc had been running in P4 when he crashed, having jumped up the order when the safety car and subsequent pit stops turned the race on its head.

His crash capped a miserable home race weekend for Ferrari, who had already lost Sebastian Vettel to an apparent brake failure early in the race. Ironically, the last time Ferrari suffered a double DNF at Monza was 1995.
