Max Verstappen pulled a lap out of the bag to claim pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, beating the McLarens and Ferraris to top spot with a remarkable recovery.
Verstappen and Red Bull looked out of sorts around the Imola circuit on Friday, struggling to make an impression on the timesheets via a series of off-track excursions and frustrated radio messages.

But the Dutchman bounced back in qualifying, finding a new level of performance in his tuned and more compliant RB20 to secure his eighth pole in a row and equal Ayrton Senna’s long-standing record.
