MUST-SEE: Colapinto suffers heavy crash during incident-filled Baku Qualifying
Alpine driver Franco Colapinto hit the wall in a session-ending crash during Qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Franco Colapinto's Qualifying ambitions were ruined in a bizarre incident that closed out Q1 at the Baku City Circuit, marking the third red flag in a heavily disrupted start to the session.
During the final seconds when multiple drivers were fighting to improve their lap times, Pierre Gasly got caught out by a tailwind and took to the run-off area, attracting the attention of his Alpine team mate who was slightly further behind on the track.
Colapinto then lost the rear of his car and slammed into the barrier before bouncing back onto the circuit, leaving debris spread across the surface as both he and Gasly were eliminated from Qualifying.
The crash followed two earlier red flags, with the first coming after Alex Albon clipped the wall at the apex of Turn 1 (see above), damaging his front-left wheel to halt the promising pace he had shown throughout the weekend.
The second was caused by Kick Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, who drove head on into the barriers and shattered his front wing – while he was able to recover and continue in the session, he could only manage P17 and was out-qualified by rookie team mate Gabriel Bortoleto once again.
