Verstappen set for 15-place grid penalty in Canada

Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen came into this weekend’s Montreal meeting carrying a five-place grid penalty - punishment for causing his late-race collision with Lotus’s Romain Grosjean in Monaco.

However, Verstappen has now received an additional 10-place drop thanks to using his fifth engine of the year in Canada. Regulations stipulate that drivers should use no more than four power units per season.

It means that, depending on where he qualifies, the Dutch rookie could be demoted as many as 15 places on the grid for Sunday’s race. If he is unable to take the penalty in full, various time penalties can be applied.

If up to five grid places are unused, he must take a five-second stop-go penalty during the race. For six to 10 places, that becomes a 10-second stop-go, and for 11 places or more it’s a drive-through penalty.
