Lando Norris executed a superb launch at lights out to control the lead of the Miami Sprint, with his team mate surging past Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli to establish a McLaren 1-2 on track.
In the second Sprint of the year, the young Italian lost out to Piastri and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc before defending from George Russell at the first corner. While he held the position, he was unable to fight his way back past Leclerc on the opening lap.
Further back, an exhilarating three-wide battle between Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto saw momentary contact unfold before the Briton charged through to take an early sixth place.
Elsewhere, Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg suffered his second DNS of the season as he was forced to pull aside on his reconnaissance lap, a fire on the car ruling him out of the 19-lap Sprint.
