PALMER: Russell got the headlines but make no mistake – Hamilton’s drive at Spa was masterful

George Russell claimed the headlines in Belgium, initially winning the race in spectacular fashion, before becoming the first driver in 30 years to be disqualified from a race win. I loved his late race cameo, and the way he decided the strategy from the cockpit, essentially overruling his team and staying out to win across the line.
For Mercedes the debrief will be underway as to what actually went wrong for the car be so clearly underweight, costing the team a splendid one-two. But this isn’t the first time the team have had issues like this recently as Russell was eliminated in Q1 in Hungary (because he didn’t have enough fuel onboard for the session), and Hamilton was disqualified from P2 in Austin last year for excessive plank wear.
