Norris to join Vettel on back row in Hockenheim after taking new power unit elements

Lando Norris didn’t enjoy his happiest day of qualifying at the German Grand Prix. And having initially put his McLaren MCL34 16th on the grid on Saturday, the Briton is now set to start from the back row in 19th after taking on a new MGU-K, energy store and control electronics.

The resultant penalty for taking those new parts means that Norris will find himself alongside Sebastian Vettel, with the German – who suffered a turbo issue yesterday which meant he wasn’t able to set a lap time in his home qualifying session – also taking a new control electronics, although the 10-place grid drop for that wouldn't affect Vettel’s starting position.

Meanwhile, having benefitted from his former team Ferrari’s total absence in Q3 – after Charles Leclerc also suffered a fuel pump issue – to put his Alfa Romeo into a sensational fifth place, Kimi Raikkonen will start Sunday’s race with a new internal combustion engine, MGU-H and turbo. However, Raikkonen will take no penalty, as those additional parts are within his allowance for the season.
