Mercedes will introduce a new-spec power unit at Monza after opting to use all of their remaining seven engine development tokens ahead of the Formula 1 Gran Premio d’Italia 2015.
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will therefore switch to their third power units of the season during the weekend.
Although Mercedes has not revealed specific areas they have developed through use of the tokens, they described the move as a ‘tactical' decision to fast-track planned developments for the 2016 season. Mercedes also hope the upgrades will help validate a new fuel from supplier Petronas.
The changes are limited to the works team for now, meaning Williams, Force India and Lotus will continue to use the previous spec Mercedes power unit.
The Silver Arrows are not the only team to introduce upgrades this weekend: Ferrari have invested three tokens in the pursuit of a more potent engine at Monza, one of the most power-dependent circuits on the calendar.
