Grid drops for Sainz and Magnussen
Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen have both been given five-place grid penalties for this afternoon’s 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe thanks to unscheduled gearbox changes on their cars after qualifying.
For Sainz, it means dropping from 13th to 18th place on the Baku grid - with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, Haas’s Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber’s Felipe Nasr and Manor’s Rio Haryanto and Pascal Wehrlein all moving up a spot as a result.
Magnussen, meanwhile, will have to start from the pit lane. As well as his previous gearbox not lasting the six consecutive events required by the regulations, Renault have also made suspension set-up changes to his car in parc ferme. The Dane had qualified 21st, just ahead of team mate Jolyon Palmer.
