FP3: Verstappen beats Russell and Hamilton in final practice for Azerbaijan GP

Max Verstappen denied George Russell a clean sweep of fastest practice times ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as the Red Bull driver finished quickest in Free Practice 3.

The Dutchman finished one-tenth clear of Russell and Lewis Hamilton with a 1m 43.922s on the streets of Baku, during a final hour of practice where drivers pushed the limits ahead of Qualifying later on Friday.

As has been the case throughout the season, teams and drivers were reluctant to immediately head out at the start of FP3, with the track surface in Baku noticeably covered in dust and leaves due to high winds.

It took until the 20-minute mark for the leading contenders to appear with the soft Pirelli tyre, Hamilton posting a 1m 46.168s before he was usurped by Charles Leclerc's 1m 45.564s on the Monegasque driver's second attempt.

Kimi Antonelli and Russell slotted into third and fourth with their first flying laps, but both Mercedes drivers began the final practice session on the medium tyre.

Verstappen briefly jumped to the top of the times thanks to a double slipstream in the final sector, before Hamilton lowered the benchmark down to a 1m 45.093s approaching the halfway point of proceedings.

Drivers including Antonelli and Verstappen noted how much the wind was having an impact, the Red Bull driver reporting that the "car is very numb in Turn 16", while the Mercedes driver went fastest with a 1m 45.046s with the yellow-walled tyre.

Times continued to tumble, Russell posting a 1m 44.715s as Hamilton, Antonelli and Verstappen found the run-off areas at Turns 1, 4 and 15 respectively.

While all rejoined, Lance Stroll's running came to an early end after glancing the inside wall at Turn 1, damaging the wheel on his Aston Martin before pulling off behind the barrier.

With just over 15 minutes remaining, both Mercedes drivers moved to the soft tyre, Russell setting a 1m 44.177s which left him six tenths clear of Antonelli after their first attempts.

The Briton lowered the benchmark down to a 1m 44.021s next time round, still leaving him two tenths clear of Antonelli, before Verstappen slotted between the pair after brushing the walls several times on his flying lap.

Russell almost came even closer to the wall, heading straight on at Turn 7 and just avoiding a head-on collision with the barrier, while Antonelli ran deep at Turn 1 as drivers pushed the limits ahead of Qualifying.

While the Mercedes drivers failed to improve, Verstappen set a 1m 43.922s in the final minutes which left him fastest at the chequered flag from Russell, Hamilton and Antonelli.

Leclerc was best of the rest in fifth ahead of Pierre Gasly (Alpine), the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, as Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) and Alpine's Franco Colapinto completed the top 10.

Carlos Sainz was P11 for Williams, ahead of Ollie Bearman (Haas), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Nico Hulkenberg's Audi and the Cadillac of Sergio Perez.

The order was completed by Alex Albon's Williams, the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin, Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac) and Stroll.
