Electrical problems in qualifying consigned Rubens Barrichello to a rear of the grid start at the 2000 German Grand Prix - but he wouldn’t be at the tail-end for long…
“I am confident that tomorrow I will be able to make up the places I lost in qualifying because I know I have a competitive car," Rubens Barrichello said after qualifying his Ferrari a distant 18th at Hockenheim. But in the race the Brazilian didn’t just make up the places he lost in qualifying, he made it all the way to the head of the field, taking his maiden Grand Prix win in an electrifying race that featured crashes, safety cars and a late flurry of rain. We join Barrichello for a flat-out and frantic opening lap through Hockenheim’s famous old forest, during which he witnesses team mate Michael Schumacher crash out at the first corner in a cloud of dust and passes a host of other cars, including the Williams of the other Schumacher sibling - Ralf.
