Alfa Romeo's F1 pedigree

1950 British GrandA dominant force in pre-war Grand Prix racing, Alfa Romeo's 158 was still very much the car to beat when the new World Championship got underway in 1950. At the first round in Silverstone, Guiseppe Farina led a 1-2-3 for the Italian marque. Alfettas would go on to win every race that season, bar the Indy 500, with Farina taking the title ahead of team mates Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli. © LAT Photographic

Wednesday’s news that Sauber have signed a multi-year technical and commercial partnership with Alfa Romeo means a return to F1 for a brand with a long and storied history in the sport. We take a pictorial look at the Italian marque’s past exploits at the pinnacle of motor racing…
