George Russell was the fastest man on day one of running in Miami, as the young Briton underlined Mercedes’ improved performance by setting the fastest time of the second practice session.
In cooler conditions than were seen in FP1, Russell – in an upgraded W13 – set a time of 1m 29.938s to lead championship leader Charles Leclerc in P2 by 0.106s. Sergio Perez was a further tenth behind in third, while Lewis Hamilton finished in P4, 0.241s off his team mate.
It was a tough afternoon for Carlos Sainz and Nicholas Latifi, who both brought out red flags in the session – the Ferrari racer spinning into the barriers at Turn 14, while Latifi lost drive and stopped on track at Turn 9.
FP2: Mercedes' Russell leads Leclerc in incident-filled Miami practice session
Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas where the only two drivers not to set a time in the session, with the reigning world champion suffering from a hydraulics issue that caused smoke at the rear of his car, while Bottas spent the afternoon in the pits after his crash in FP1.
Relive the action from an action-packed second practice session in Miami, as the drivers get set for tomorrow’s qualifying battle.
